The Ascent field guide

Four Islands. Three Sea Crossings.

Crownfall, Graskarn, Thrymgard and Cindermaw form the road ahead. Getting to the next island is an adventure of its own.

Choose the road

Each island has a branching map, a hub, events and two possible bosses. Your route can take you through ordinary fights, Champions, Hearths, Ravens and barrows before the island lord.

A route is a sequence of decisions. Look at what is ahead, what the party can survive and where you will get a chance to recover or improve the deck.

From the beach to the volcano

Begin on Crownfall, with Warrok and the Berserker Chieftain among its threats. Sail onward to Graskarn, the Vampyr Matriarch's hunting ground.

Thrymgard brings glaciers, fjords and encounters with the Frost Giant or Frost Dragon. Cindermaw is the fourth island: lava fields, Eldvik and the Mountain Dragon beneath the volcano.

The Frost Giant winds up a 40-damage Rite Smash on Thrymgard.

The Voyage

Between the islands, board the knarr and follow a sea chart. The Grey Strait, the Whale Road and the Cinder Reach connect the four stages of your saga.

Fight boarders on the deck and face a sea beast at the end of each crossing. The Skerry-Back, Hafgufa and Ashcoil are more than scenery on the horizon. Keep the deck ready for company.

Ship-deck battle: a Cleric and a Druid on the deck face three huge tentacles and a giant squid head rising from a rough grey sea.
The Hafgufa rises beside the knarr on the Whale Road: three tentacles and the beast itself.

Something is following you

Each island has a rival warband. It takes cards you leave behind on reward screens and meets you at the chase and the gate.

What you pass over can return in an enemy hand. Watch the reward screen, consider what the warband wants and remember that your next choice can strengthen more than your own deck.
